A Sad Song

by Ruth Marie Brown

In the quiet of the evening,
When the whole world seems so still,
There's a mourning dove a-wailing
Out upon a lonely hill.

He's a-cryin' and a-mournin'
Just as sad as he can be.
Is it my imagination,
Or does he mourn for me?

You see, My Love has left me,
He's gone away for good
He's lying in a lonely grave,
I'd join him if I could.

He left behind a lot of work
I'm trying to get done,
The raising of our family,
Our daughters and our sons.

Someday, I'll join him in a land
That's pure and heavenly,
And then that lonely mournin' dove
Won't have to weep for me.
